1st Heddon-on-the-Wall Brownies
Northumberland
“Brownies is about trying new things that teach girls aged seven to 10 about themselves, their community and their world.”
This is exactly what we do at 1st Heddon-on-the-Wall Brownies. Since the introduction of the new Girlguiding programme last year, we have tried to get out of the meeting place and give girls the chance to have new experiences outside. This has included a Brownie holiday where the girls worked together on everything from setting the table to building dens in the woods. This was the first time the majority of the girls had been away from home without their parents, and they immediately asked when the next trip will be.
We are now planning another trip for the Easter holidays next year, where girls will be able to undertake more adventurous activities, encompassing both individual and team challenges – examples may include archery, Jacob’s Ladder, low ropes or nightline. We are, however, aware that without funding some of our girls may not be able to take part, so receiving a Together Fund grant will enable us to subsidise the cost of this trip, to allow more girls to take part. We are currently in the early stages of planning this trip, but it will be held at a local outdoor activities centre, where the girls can once again stay away from home for the weekend, while also enabling them to complete more challenging outdoor activities.
