AutismAble is a specialist education provider for young adults age 16+ with autism and/or additional needs. Our learners are all unique in their own individual way and are of all different abilities; at AutismAble we aim to provide education and training for ALL in A Better Learning Environment. Many of our leaners have sensory issues and we have recently created a sensory room with an underwater theme, trying to bring the ‘outside in’. Now we would like to take our learning outside and overhaul our garden area to create a sensory garden; a place where our learners can be stimulated in a happy, positive environment. We believe that encouraging our learners to use the environment around them will help to develop their skills in STEM. Our hope is that asking by our learners to learn about angles, measurements, graphs and measurements using what they can find around them, their attention would be more focused than in a classroom. We feel that being able to use their senses would encourage their use of descriptive language, whilst instilling in them a passion and interest in the nature that surrounds them. We have plans for the garden that our learners were involved in creating and they would play a big part in bringing those plans to life, developing their interest engineering and seeing their designs become reality. We believe that a sensory garden would enhance the curriculum we offer and inspire a passion in our learners that classroom based learning may not.
