Coquet Park First School
North Tyneside
We are a small 1 form entry First School situated on the sea front at Whitley Bay. As a school, we are keen to develop and embed STEM throughout the school, and enthuse the children with a love of STEM. We try to promote STEM within our broad and balance curriculum in school and offer the children many opportunities to take part in STEM activities. We run a successful STEM week in school where we invite lots of visitors into school to work with the children. We take advantage of Newcastle University who offer free workshops, and we also work with University students. At the moment we are working with a Student at Newcastle University to help with her dissertation. We are investigating the issue of plastic pollution and the effect it has on the world oceans and marine wildlife.
We have taken part in the Primary Engineers award for the past 2 years, with great results and which to continue to promote STEM in school. We are looking to run an after school STEM club in the Summer term and are looking at several providers to assist us with this. An award would help us to ensure a STEM club could be run after school, which would help to further promote the STEM focus we have in school. It would allow us to help develop the children’s enthusiasm in a different environment to the classroom, and hopefully offer them some fun and educational experiences.
Many thanks,
Jackie Foster
