The Durham Christian Partnership Schools Mentoring Project aims to provide mentoring for children and young people aged 11 – 16 who are at risk of exclusion and offending. Young people are given support in the form of a meeting for an hour or more with a mentor or mentors in school or at a local community farm. This gives them an opportunity to build a mentoring relationship with one or more stable, supportive adults and to be listened to. The project links volunteer mentors with young people who need extra encouragement in developing their creativity and life skills.

We are presently working with a small number of mentees who are in Year 10 and 11 at North Durham Academy, Stanley. In November 2020 during the pandemic we were offered the opportunity to have access to Pelton Grange Farm as an occasional resource (occasional weekends and school holidays) for mentoring activities and informal education. It is a five and a half acre small holding close to Stanley with fields, woods, ponds, apple trees, raised garden beds, greenhouse, poly tunnel, chicken coop and large barn. This has been an opportunity for mentees to enjoy being in a relaxed countryside environment and be able to learn new skills. They have also been enjoying building camp fires in the woods and cooking food. Plans for future activities include archery, boxing coaching and motor vehicle maintenance.
