Grace House North East Award Icon Runner Up

Sunderland

Grace House provides short care breaks for children aged 5 to 18 years of age with complex disabilities and life limiting conditions. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to enjoy their childhood, to reach their potential and to make their unique contribution. For the children their stay gives them independence away from home to experience “sleepovers” like other children do, to make friends and to engage in exciting and fun activities. For parents, it gives them some qulaity time to spend with other family members and to recharge their batteries from 24/7 demanding caring roles, knowing their child is well cared for in wonderful surroundings. We fundraise for the activities programme and for specialist equipment in our purpose built centre, created mostly through community fundraising efforts. We are lucky enough to have wonderful garden areas with pizza ovens, festival area and some adapted play equipment which the children and young people benefit from. Although most of the children staying with us are from Sunderland (we are currently the only short breaks provider here) we do have some children from Gateshead, Durham, South and North Tyneside. If we were lucky enogh to receive an award we would spend the grant on the activities programme or for equipment that the children benefit from. We have a wish list that the children have drawn up of what they would like. They love going to the cinema, bowling, adventure parks etc. We are always grateful for any support we receive.
