Hutton Henry School Eco Squad
Durham
Hutton Henry School Eco Squad was formed at the beginning of this school year and has already made a big difference to the children in school, and had an impact on the local community. Hutton Henry School is a very small school with only 65 pupils. The Eco Squad has members from half of the school and follows the children’s interests and ideals. As a small school fundraising is very difficult, but this year the children have organised their own fundraising to buy new green cardboard and paper recycling bins for school. They have also successfully applied for a Durham Civic Pride award to plant a wildflower patch on a part of the school field that is shared with the local community. Furthermore, the Eco Squad have applied for and been granted the school’s first Eco Green Flag award for all of their hard work and commitment to the environment.
The Eco Squad have shown a real commitment to their local environment and reducing waste within school and the surrounding area. They would like to raise money for polytunnels to be installed within the school grounds so that the whole school community can benefit from fresh produce, grown by themselves. This would encourage our school to commit to sustainability and enable all pupils to become more aware of environmental issues and healthy eating. Parent volunteers have expressed an interest in helping us with this project. This would be available for all pupils to participate in, thus increasing pupil well-being.
