Newcastle Roller Girls
Newcastle
Newcastle Roller Girls is a grassroots sports team based in Newcastle. We play and promote roller derby, a fast-growing women’s sport.
We are a non-profit, constituted organisation with charitable aims. We are governed by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and UK Roller Derby Association.
Our objectives are to strive for athletic excellence, promote teamwork and community, while encouraging women into sport.
We comprise 85 members and our last beginner course saw 69 women try the sport. All members pay subs and volunteer time to run and grow the league.
This year, through hard work and determination, our A team qualified for the first WFTDA European Continental Cup. The Cup, to be played in Birmingham, brings together eight of the best European teams.
The entry fee is £398. If successful, we would put the grant towards this fee. We estimate the cost of taking part to be £2,000, including entry, accommodation and travel for 24 members (20 skaters, 4 coaches).
Our ethos is to ensure that no-one is excluded from competitive opportunity because of financial constraint. We play and fundraise as a team. We will host fundraising events to cover remaining costs.
Taking part in the tournament represents the culmination of a long-term competitive goal and will benefit all skaters through the learning opportunities gained from high level competition. It also allows us to take the skills learned into the wider community – we regularly coach smaller North East teams and recently ran beginner sessions for Active North Tyneside.
