Newcastle University Surf Club
Newcastle
Newcastle University Surf Club is an all ability club for students to get out in the water and catch waves. Anyone is welcome, and the aim of the club is for people to meet fellow surfers and make friends in and out of the water. However, at times surfing can be a very individual sport. Whilst we run trips when possible where members are able to get to know each other, practicing and improving can often be a solo mission- especially when attempting to line up students timetables and availability. That’s why, with the help of a £250 grant, surf club would like to run an outdoor adventure day to promote team work and encourage bonding. This would involve doing an activity that requires members of surf club to work together- not on their own, as is often the way with catching waves. We would run this with the help of Endless Adventure North East, who offer a variety of courses in canyoning, white water rafting and gorge walking. Having completed a day working entirely as a group, I feel the members of surf club would be a more supportive team as a result. This would ultimately improve the club as surfers as well as team members; being able to support and encourage others in the water is a massive aid to boosting their confidence and in turn improving their skills.
