Pierremont Giving Garden
Darlington
The Giving Garden began in 2016 when a group of volunteers thought it a good idea to establish a garden where they can grow fruit and vegetables for the local community! It occupies a small plot of land adjacent to the Methodist Church building in The Denes, Darlington, and has been transformed from an unused area into a neatly cultivated and productive garden with raised beds and a the beginnings of a small orchard. A ‘growing’ group from the local community get together and tend a wide range of vegetables – some of which they use themselves, but many are left for the local people to help themselves. They have been successful in not only growing tasty vegetables despite the British weather, but attracting the interest of local residents who now come and help with the work, enjoy the company and drink tea – especially a lively group of children who help out and learn about where some of their food comes from, and eventually enjoy the ‘fruits’ of their labours.
The weather in Britain is not always as good as this summer and the team are now looking to build a small shelter so they can extend their growing season when it turns colder and wetter. A contribution from the Community Fund will be much appreciated for this.
