Slugtown
Newcastle
Slugtown are a not-for-profit art organisation making contemporary art accessible and empowering for the public and local community. We want art to be fun, social and challenging. We work with local residents, having regular input sessions to make sure the project is responsive to the needs of the community.
We have sourced Arts Council funding to run an active and engaging exhibition and workshop programme, starting in Shieldfield in 2020.
Alongside these we will run our ArtMaker Workshop, a 4-week FREE course designed to show that anyone can be an artist, and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. The course will be open to all ages and participants will be taken through the whole process of making art – from building their own easel from timber, through painting, drawing and sculpture workshops, to taking professional photos of their finished works. The workshop will result in a huge group exhibition in Slugtown’s gallery space.
The course will provide valuable practical take-away skills in individuals, and nurtures creativity, confidence and a you-can-do-it attitude. It will also enable social cohesion and within the locality.
The funding from Venator would be used to buy materials for the ArtMaker workshop (timber, paper, paint, brushes etc) and refreshments for the group exhibition.
