Spennymoor Cricket Club
Durham
When I originally began the application on behalf of Spennymoor Cricket Club, it was for a new set of cricket balls at my Dad Mel Groves’ request, he has been part of SCC for the past 29 years. Many of the players on this team have been around since the 1990s, spending every Saturday April to September playing cricket.
On Saturday 7th July, the cricket club pavilion was targeted by arsonists and left the cricket club not only without a clubhouse, but no equipment, facilities and other items they had paid for over the years. This was a devastating blow to the cricket team, the supporters (including myself) and the town as a whole.
We are currently fundraising towards rebuilding the cricket club but we can’t do this alone, the money from the Venator community fund would be a great benefit and it would be put towards buying new equipment, including stumps and the cricket balls but also towards rebuilding the club. The cricket club has to start from the bottom & build up from there. The team has taken to branding their fundraising efforts as ‘Rising from the Ashes’.
The cricket club survives on players subs every season and without these, it would cease to exist. The cricket club is currently thriving on the playing front, with two teams and new players starting this season, but they are unable to do this without a cricket club pavilion.
