Waverley Primary School is a one form entry school based in the outer west of Newcastle upon Tyne. Over the last few months the school has been developing our Science/STEM curriculum by working with specialist trainers STEM Education to enhance the skills of our teaching staff across all key stages. We are beginning work in the Easter holidays on converting a classroom into a new home economics / science hub where the children will have a purpose built room to carry out more practical experiments and cooking sessions. The grant will be used to support and expand the work the school is doing within the science curriculum and in developing our children’s skills and aspirations.

We are also taking part in a DFE project to raise the aspirations of our children when it comes to their future career choices and building the our pupils enthusiasm for STEM will enable them to understand the wider range of career opportunities that can open up to them . Many of our pupils come from areas of high deprivation (top 10% – IDACI) and many lack the ‘cultural capital’ that has been identified as crucially important for later-life outcomes, educationally, professionally and in terms of health & lifestyle.

Our secondary schools have highlighted a gap in our children’s practical skills when transitioning into Year 7, any funds received will be used to purchase the relevant resources in order to develop those practical skills and knowledge.
