Woodsmoke Group Award Icon Runner Up

Sunderland

Woodsmoke Group was previously known as “St Gabriel’s Boys’ Camp” dating back to 1912 and has held an annual 10-day summer camp since then. In 2019 we became an independent CIO, registered with the Charity Commission and are now completely independent of the Church.

The structure has remained much the same throughout its history and works well. The camp has traditionally used a communal marquee with the campers in bell tents. Each tent includes boys of differing ages and experience so that we get a balance throughout the whole camp. The age range in a tent is 10 to 17 with a Tent Officer [TO] aged 18 upwards in charge. They participate in games and competitions and entertain themselves in the evenings with a singsong. Each tent also takes a daily turn as the ‘Orderly Tent’ – helping to cook, serve, and clean up.

The typical daytime activities, after tent tidying, mainly focus on inter-tent sports such as football and podex (a cross between cricket/rounders) and a rotation of varied outdoor activities such as mountain biking, river rafting, orienteering and bushcraft, all encouraging teamwork and cooperation from the campers.

The grant would go towards funding these activities plus costs incurred in safeguarding, catering, and maintaining high standards. Our vision is that no individual would be prevented from attending camp due to financial considerations as we are committed to helping as many potential campers as possible participate in this unique opportunity.

Our values are simple – Equity, Empathy, Accountability and Quality.
