Wylam Brownies
Northumberland
Brownies is for ALL girls aged seven to ten. Brownies have incredible experiences together, make new friends and discover the world around them, learning new skills and taking on challenges as they work out what they want to be and do in the future.
Wylam Brownies is a thriving unit with 26 girls and 6 adult volunteers. In 2018 Girlguiding launched a new programme, Wylam Brownies have been enjoying exploring the new activities and badges that are on offer to them.
With funding from Venator’s Bright Ideas fund we would purchase the resources to focus on the new Innovate Skills Builder supported by Amey and Rolls-Royce and challenge the Brownies with STEM activities. Innovate unlocks creativity with ideas, experiments and problem solving. The Brownies can choose either Stage 2 or 3 activities appropriate to their abilities.
Stage 2 includes learning about computer algorithms via dance, being inspired by inventions we use every day, a creative construction challenge with fruit or vegetables and experimenting with materials to make the most efficient boat sails.
Stage 3 sees the Brownies taking on a zip wire challenge, trying different materials to create the quickest miniature zip wire, tackling a sporty challenge to discover how different balls behave and understand which are right for each sport and learning engineering knowledge to “build” a skyscraper.
Wylam Brownies enjoy activities away from our meeting place, we would use funding for travel to an Apple Store to explore coding with Sphero the Robot and complete the Google Challenge.
