Here at Levendale Primary School, we have a group of children who form The Green Team who are passionate about the environment and they share and implement their ideas to reduce the environmental impact from school.

They would like to start litter picking with each class taking part and we would use the grant to purchase litter picking equipment to ensure it is carried out safely by the children. The children would work in teams to collect litter which would give them a sense of purpose and pride in looking after their local area. Working in teams would teach them essential communication and social skills which have been impacted by the COVID19 pandemic such as expressing their ideas, improving self-confidence, reducing bullying and set up life skills.

If we were successful in receiving the £1,000 grant, the children would like to purchase water butts to reduce water usage and use the rainwater for school plants and flowers. They would also like to install compost bins to divert organic waste away from landfill. Composting the school waste would open up resources to engage the children to work in teams to learn about minibeasts, food chains, improving the environment and give them a hands-on experience of the natural world.

In a time when it is increasingly important to protect our environment, the introduction of litter picking, compost bins and water butts would teach our children the importance of looking after our world and to see what a difference they can make.
