Plane Sailing for Heroes is a Veterans Support CIC offering training in traditional heritage skills and modern woodworking techniques to military veterans who are looking to learn practical skills. Plane Sailing for Heroes aim is to help ex-military personnel develop mental resilience and coping strategies to counter the effects of PTSD, anxiety, stress, loneliness, and isolation sustained as a result of military service. We offer reintegration into a society from which many feel excluded and isolated by helping them lead active and fulfilling lives.

We have formed in reaction to the closure of the H4H, Phoenix House Recovery Centre at Catterick which had previously provided an in-house woodworking facility since 2015. Our Boatshed / Woodshop is being run by its former manager and volunteers. Following the closure of Phoenix House, it former manager kept the original participants together with Zoom sessions, phone calls and an email blog of what the future could be in a new Boat Shed / Woodshop.

The new Boat shed / Woodshop is currently 95% complete with all work being carried out by its volunteers. Our first project is to complete the build of a 30-foot Viking longboat, using a mixture of traditional heritage skills and modern techniques, which on completion will showcase their skills and abilities. This facility will improve the veterans’ quality of life and chances of employment.

We are now ready to invite Veterans into Plane Sailing for Heroes, the grant will enable us to provide PPE and workwear for the Veterans.
