We would like to run a weekly informal meeting group at Yarm Wellness Centre for local men struggling with poor mental health and isolation. We have a wonderful, newly refurbished hall in the centre of Yarm currently offering support for a number of different groups from veterans to pensioners to new mums, all suffering with isolation in the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic.

In the UK three times as many men as women take their own lives. According to the Government’s wellbeing survey, men report much lower levels of life satisfaction than women and they are considerably more likely to turn to harmful coping mechanisms such as drugs and alcohol. Societal expectations and gender stereotyping compound the problem with men feeling that they must be strong, support the family and not display their emotions. Suicide is the largest cause of death in men under 50.

It is our hope to provide a safe and welcoming space for local men to get together, share their experiences and support each other in an accessible, judgement free environment. As well as a friendly face, we would like to provide refreshments and sign posting to support services where necessary. We have a fantastic, committed team of volunteers here at Yarm Wellness and we are all keen to offer our support and share our community.
